Romance Defined
What is a romance?
Simply put, a romance is a love affair. This emotional and passionate relationship becomes the central focus in the book's plot, overshadowing all other elements such as intrigue and mystery or family and social issues. At the heart of a romance are the hearts of the hero and heroine who struggle to be together despite what tears them apart, albeit deception, betrayal, family, friends, murder, and a host of other problems posing serious conflict and doubt about the other.
A true romance results in a happy ending. Love stories must reward the reader with a heart-wrenching tale that culminates in an idyllic ending . . . something that happens less than often in the real world but which is deeply desired, thus generating over $1 billion in sales of romance fiction per year.
